Ironman 70.3 Muncie
Drawing on Endurance Corner’s collective years of experience and access to an extended network of some of the most knowledgeable racers, we wanted to provide our best recommendations for approaching some of the biggest races around the world.
Travel
The race site is located on the North East side of the state of Indiana approximately ninety minutes from the Indianapolis Airport. Please note that this year (2014) the packet pickup (10 a.m. – 7 p.m.) is at the race site at Prairie Creek Reservoir (7801 S County Rd 560 East Selma, IN 47383).
Accommodations are challenging and not plentiful. Hotels in the nearest small city, Muncie, Ind., are approximately 20 minutes from the race site. Your choices are limited and you may need to stay as far away as Indianapolis. I have had friends successfully rent RVs and stay at the race site for the weekend. They also had amazing after parties.
Pre-Race Workouts
- Swimming – There is a small beach at the transition area with a short buoy-protected area for public swimming.
- Cycling – Easy to bike the course.
- Running – Easy to run the course.
Weather
I have experienced every possible race condition in Muncie. Expect hot and humid. Do not be surprised if it is windy and thunderstorms roll onto the course. It is even possible this year that it could be wetsuit legal due to some unusual weather. Expect nothing and anticipate everything. Bring your wetsuit
Race Morning
Get to transition early! It opens at 4:30 a.m. and due to limited access it can take some time to get into the race area.
Swim
This swim is in a clockwise direction ending at the beach. The hardest part of the swim is that it will end into the sun on a clear day. I recommend shaded goggles if the sky is clear. The best sighting tip is to swim towards the ambulance lights to find the finish.
Bike
This course is a cyclist’s dream. Expect some early rollers and some rough pavement. Once you hit US-35 expect to fly even if you have a head wind. This will be a two loop course this year and will most likely be congested. Be safe and fast.
Run
The run is the hardest part of this race. You are running an out and back course that has lots of hills and rollers. There is little to no shade and things can get steamy. The course never gets easy and ends with an uphill climb just before you make the last short descent to the finish.
The race volunteers are incredible on this run and they will take great care of you.
Post-Race
Try to get out of the heat as quickly as possible. There is usually a cooling tent at the finish and ice cream for race participants.
Your Team
If you have friends and family that want to support you on race day, I highly suggest they get to the site before 7 a.m. when the roads close. Make sure they bring their own shade and plenty of beverages to stay cool. This is one of the few races I attend without sherpas. They have suffered too much in the past!
